There\'s Just Something About that Name

There's Just Something About that NameDecember 17, 2020

There is a hymn that most of you will know  and have song. It was written by Bill Gaither in 1970 and has remained a popular chorus since then. You may want to sing it out loud as you read the words below.

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus;
There's just something about that name!
Master, Savior, Jesus,
Like the fragrance after the rain.
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
Let all heaven and earth proclaim;
Kings and kingdoms will all pass away,
But there's something about that name!

As we approach Christmas day there is usually an increased focus upon the name of Jesus. This includes the many other titles given him such as Christ, Immanuel, Messiah, the Holy One of Israel, and the list goes one. In the prophetic passage of Isaiah 9:6 we are given additional titles or names used to describe Jesus.

"For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."     - Isaiah 9:6

This passage is recognized as prophetic message of the Coming Messiah and is often highlighted during the Christmas season, along with Isaiah 7:14. There are three things I want to share that I hope will assist us in better understanding why or what is so special about the name or better yet, the person of Jesus. First, this passage address...

THE MYSTERY OF JESUS”For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given…” The first part reminds us of His miraculous birth – born of a virgin. The second part reminds us that He preexisted this birth, this passage, and even creation.  The miraculous nature is not only the truth that Jesus was born of a virgin, rather that He was born at all. Jesus is Eternal...He is God...His birth is the revelation of God Incarnate. He is 100% man and 100% God.

A Child is born - speaks of humanity
A Son is given - speaks of divinity
A Child is born - speaks of impotence
A Son is given - speaks of omnipotence
A Child is born - speaks of the terrestrial
A Son is given - speaks of the celestial
A Child is born - speaks of the earthly
A Son is given - speaks of the heavenly
A Child is born - speaks of the Son of man
A Son is given - speaks of the Son of God

This is the Mystery of Jesus, concealed in the Old Testament as a prophetic utterance of the coming Messiah. Yet, revealed in the New Testament in the person of Jesus the Christ Child. The second thing this passage reveals is...

THE MAJESTY OF JESUS“And the government will be upon His shoulder…” Verse 7 also informs us “Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end…” The government of Jesus will be like no other; established in the lineage of King David it will be eternal, righteous, and He will reign and usher in perfect peace. Jesus is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. This is THE MAJESTY OF JESUS. The third thing this passage addresses is...

THE MINISTRY OF JESUS - ”And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace…” Many years ago; pastor, theologian, and author Warren Wiersbe gave to the preaching world an outline for these titles given of the coming Messiah. Many pastors have used and adapted them to present them to others. Here is my shortened version for them as they assist us in recognizing that there is something special about the name of Jesus. First...

HIS NAME IS WONDERFUL - this takes care of the DULLNESS in life. Jesus tells us in John 10:10 that He has come to give us an abundant life. Paul exhorts us in Philippians 4:4 to rejoice always. How can life be dull, when we have a WONDERFUL Savior. Next...

HIS NAME IS COUNSELOR - this takes care of the DECISIONS in life. Each day we are inundated with decisions that must be made. From simple to complex, we have a counselor who will not abandon or fail us. In James 1:5 we are reminded that when we lack wisdom, we can go to God who gives it to us. Thirdly...

HIS NAME IS MIGHTY GOD - this takes care of the DEMANDS in life. Life is demanding and I am so glad that I serve a Lord who can handle all things. Who is with us and will not forsake us. God called upon Joshua to "be strong and of good courage." Paul wrote in Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love and of a sound mind." Jesus offers the encouragement in John 16:33 that just He has overcome tribulation in this life, so will we. During these demanding times we can rely on Jesus who is the MIGHTY GOD. Fourthly...

HIS NAME IS EVERLASTING FATHER - this takes care of the DIMENSIONS of life. Hebrews 12:2 tells us that Jesus is "the author and finisher of our faith." In Revelation 1:8 Jesus announces that He is "the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End." Jesus is eternal and there is no dimension in our life that He is not present and at work. Whether we are young children or one of God's older children, Jesus is there. In life, death, and in glory, He is with us for HIS NAME IS EVERLASTING FATHER. Lastly...

HIS NAME IS PRINCE OF PEACE - this takes care of the DISTURBANCES of life. We live in a world that is very disturbing. This is a time of chaos and confusion. Jesus taught us in John 14:27, "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." The world declares that peace is the absence of conflict; however, the peace that Jesus gives to us remains, even in the midst of conflict for HIS NAME IS PRINCE OF PEACE.

THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT THAT NAME for one day every knee will bow & tongue confess that Jesus is Lord. It is my prayer that you and many others will also be able to proclaim at that time that Jesus is not only Lord, but your Savior as well.

In His service, for His glory,

Pastor Michael
